One reason that comic book heroes are appealing is the wish fulfillment that they represent. Spider-Man, almost more than any other hero is a prime example of this. Back in the day when comics were largely read by nerdy loners, who among them wouldn't have been pulled in by a story about a nerdy, loner kid named Peter Parker who is picked on for being smart and nice, but then is given great power (which obviously brought with it great responsibility) whereupon he starts saving the city as the wisecracking masked hero Spider-Man and dating beautiful girls? Thats pretty much the very definition of wish fulfillment for a socially awkward or otherwise downtrodden youth. Now that comic books are more popular, Peter Parker has changed in these new movies. He is still smart and all that, but now he is brimming with social confidence and clearly is a very hip and cool kid. This maybe lessens from his wish fulfillment for all the old school comic book readers, but you can't blame them for deciding to make a character more charismatic and attractive (blame it on the Tony Stark effect). Besides whenever he's in that costume, swinging around the city it sure does look like an awful lot of fun to me. Plus, they finally started to get the eyes on his suit right! It only took them 5 movies. Bottom line is that like Iron Man, whenever Peter Parker is in his suit, it just looks like a blast and any time a character is more like Iron Man, well, thats just wish fulfillment.
