Some actors have trademarks that they are known for. Arnold Schwarzenegger always says "I'll be back". Brad Pitt eats a lot. Shia Labeouf yells "No!" almost all the time. Johnny Depp is eccentric and probably oddly dressed. Chuck Norris has a beard (since there is nothing on earth sharp enough to actually shave Chuck Norris' beard). What about Tom Cruise? You might think it is that he plays self-assured male leads with cocky, boyish grins, but you'd be wrong. Tom Cruise's trademark is that he is gonna make you watch him run. He always runs, and its a fairly distinctive run. Some might even call it strange. Nevertheless, it is ever present in nearly every Tom Cruise movie. The Mission Impossible movies are practically a pedestal for Tom Cruise's running. As spry as he must be, I figure Tom was looking to stretch those muscles further and so he starred in a movie that would require him to be strapped into a big, bulky and awkward robot suit most of the time even though he was fighting incredibly fast and agile alien invaders. Do you think that stopped him from running? Of course not! Awful robot suit or not, Tommy's gotta run! This must have been simple testing of one's range as an actor. I don't think there is any other explanation for such terrible looking robot suits in today's age of cool Iron Man suits unless it was in order to give Tom and his running a new challenge. Being the competent actor that he is, Tom took on the challenge, prevailed and ended up with a pretty decent Tom Cruise flick.
