Last Thursday the Utes faced MWC preseason favorites TCU. Both these teams had hoped or expected better starts, but both acquired 2 conference losses quickly. This made Thursday's game very important. The winner could maintain some hope for competing for the MWC title (albeit as a longshot), while the loser would most certainly be out of it. Once again I had some folks over to watch this one. Since the Utes lost the last time I did this my superstitious self was worried, but I had to include any other Utes I could find in this. I had plenty of Coca Cola for my halftime coke superstition to help bring some good karma.
The game started well with a good scoring drive by the Utes. Nothing really dominate, but consistent advancement down field. The Utes took the early lead 7-0 on a Mack TD. The defense came out and stopped TCU, 3 and out. It was nice. I was feeling comfortable. Offensively the Utes handled themselves well in the first half. Not great, but good enough to put some points on the board. Defensively they were pretty solid stuffing TCU's running game and forcing quite a few INTs. It was a great first half except for two big TCU breaks. They blocked a punt and returned it for a TD and then with that momentum they ran a misdirection play on their next possession and scorched the Utes for some 50 yard pass to the 1 yard line leading to another TD. Fortunately the Utes put another scoring drive together and also Burnett had a INT that he returned for a TD. TCU finished the half with a bank shot FG (bounced off the upright). Halftime score was 24-17 for the Utes. Second half was much sloppier. Neither team could sustain a drive and mistakes were made. Fortunately this wasn't just afflicting the Utes and TCU also struggled to make big conversions. In the end it was a mostly forgettable second half with each team just scoring a FG. TCU made it interesting with some late game drives, but had to settle for a FG (after they had a INT returned to them on a bogus PI call). They attempted an onsides kick which initially looked successful until it was replayed and evident that TCU got to the ball before any Utes touched it. The Utes were then able to drain the clock to 0. Final score 27-20. It wasn't the most impressive win, but a win is a win and this was a good one to get especially considering it was on the road. The Utes still have a shot if someone can do them a favor and knock off the cougars one of these weeks. GO UTES!!!

Again, I was close. Wait for my next prediction later this week, including a stunning upset of the MWC leaders byu-provo (not hawaii or idaho, just for clearification to all frequenters of this blog) by the SDSU scholars. The SDSU Savants have figured out what such powerhouses as Toledo were able to figure out: how to beat the white guys that pretend to be islanders.

Tulsa, Toledo...both equate to a schedule more commonly seen on a Division three women's only school. Nice one provo!
